In Greece it’s celebrated as Protomagia and has been since ancient times. Maios (May) took its name from the Goddess Maia, daughter of Atlas, the eldest of the seven sisters that make up the Pleiades who was identified with nourishment and fertility and became the Earth itself to the Romans. One this day in Greece wreathes of flowers are hung above doors to welcome the summer, and Glossa was in bloom!
